240 Million Windows 7 operating systems Sold in First Year

In excess of 240 million copies of Windows 7 have been sold in the first year since the operating system hit store shelves.

With the one-year anniversary of Windows 7 hitting tomorrow, Microsoft today announced that its latest client OS has sold more than 240 million units in the first year of availability. As always, the company also noted that Windows 7 is the fastest selling operating system in history.

“As of September, Windows 7 was running on 93% of new consumer PCs and has over 17% global OS market share (according to Net Applications as of October 1st);that’s more than four times the current market share of its nearest competitor, Mac OS X, which accounts for just 4.2 percent.  ”

“Businesses are getting on the Windows 7 train. Microsoft News Center has a fantastic article giving an overview of Windows 7 for business and includes perspectives from analysts and Microsoft executives highlighting several Windows 7 customers.”

Windows 7 was released to manufacturing in the summer of 2009 and hit General Availability on October 22nd, 2009, almost a year ago.
